Urban Desires
Bij de 30+ serie zoek ik in de eerste plaats naar desolate plekken die vooral voor 30-plussers zeer herkenbaar zijn. De architectonische omgeving is aantrekkelijk door zijn verschil aan structuur en strakke vormen maar stoot tegelijkertijd af door zijn sombere karakter. Die levenloze plekken vragen om een zeer snelle, rauwe, maar methodische schilderwijze.
In schril kontrast daarmee staan de intieme, pasteus geschilderde gezinnen die plompverloren in het landschap zijn geplaatst; als toeristen die op een plek zijn waar ze zich niet thuis voelen. De afwezigheid van schaduw maakt nog eens duidelijk dat ze hier nooit zullen aarden.

In het latere werk zijn op dezelfde soort plekken geen mensen meer aanwezig. Zijn die plekken dan nog steeds troosteloos of zijn ze dan juist in rust en in evenwicht? De plekken die ik verafschuw probeer ik dragelijk te maken; zoals bij een plein van een winkelcentrum die normaal gesproken vol met mensen staat laat ik deze mensen verdwijnen, bij een mooi natuurlandschap laat ik juist de vervuilende industrie de rust verstoren. Ik beleef de stad en de grens daarvan altijd samen met dreiging en verstoring, maar ook wanneer ik het juist niet verwacht word ik verrast met schoonheid! Ik ben erg geïnteresseerd in deze tegenstellingen zoals ook met: vermaak - verveling, vrijheid - beperking, mens- natuur of betrokkenheid - isolement.
De serie Villa’s gaat over de ontsnapping naar de harmonieuze natuur weg uit de stad met zijn maatschappelijke druk, naar ‘een vrije villa’, één van de hoogste symbolen van succes, maar al snel worden het landschap en de elementen dreigend en slaat de eenzaamheid toe. De villa wordt decadent en is niet op zijn plaats. Geen toevluchtoord meer, maar een gevangenis.
Urban Desires
For the 30+ series I first of all looked for desolated areas that are especially recognisable for people who are 30 plus. The architectural surroundings are very appealing because of their different structures and fine forms but ,at the same time, repulsive because of their gloomy character. These uninhabitable places ask for a fast, raw but methodical painting technique.
In cold contrast with this are the intimate thickly painted families that are placed in this landscape, as tourists who don’t belong there. The absence of shadows makes it even more clear they will never feel at home.
In the later works similar places contain no people. Are these areas without people more depressing or are they peaceful and in harmony? The places I despise, I try to make attractive; at a shopping mall square, normally crowded with people I removed them all. On the other hand, in a beautiful landscape, I have painted contaminating industries that ruin the serenity. I experience the city and its boundaries as disturbing and alarming while in some places where I least expect it I find beauty. I find these contrasts very interesting as well as the following: excitement - boredom, freedom - limitation, humanity – nature, belonging - isolation.
The series with Villas shows the escape from the city, with its pressure from society, to harmonious nature - to the villa, one of the greatest symbols of success. Soon enough, however, the landscape and the earthly elements become alarming and loneliness hits in. The villa becomes decadent and out of place, not a refuge anymore but a prison.
